In Korea there's a gray list for schools. There should really be something like that for Japan. I don't think teachers generally go to Japan in search of a disorganized school, in the countryside, with lots of driving and no night life, and a contract that has more loop holes than all the six flags parks put together.
It's about time the teachers who are fed up with being treated poorly because we have no legal protection did something about the bad businessmen.
We may not have it as bad as our students, but the experience of living in Japan shouldn't include the worst job of one's life.

After this I am going to attempt to change the title of this blog. I don't know what the legal ramifications of making a gray list for Japan will be. Maybe that's why I couldn't find any when I was looking for a job.

Don't change a thing! There is nothing in Japanese law that says you can not voice your opinion and experiences on a blog; That law only exists in the mind of The Guch. Plus, if you are international, he'd have to go through the United Nations to get your blog account deleted.
Horiguchi is nonetheless still active in trying to take down all these anti-GLC blogs. He was successful in pulling down the one on Propellor that has attracted a lot of comments, as well as the one on GaijinPot. Guch can be a real bastard when it comes to suppressing opinions.
So keep the GLC posts coming - positive or negative, they are all helpful for prospective teachers!
p.s. The only reason a Gray List does not exist in Japan is because GaijinPot, the largest forum, values ad revenue over truthful posts. It's up to indi blogs like this one to spread the word.

I taught at GLC for a few years and was extremely happy there!
Over time I had ingratiated myself with Horiguchi-san so that I could gain an advantage over the other teachers at GLC. It’s a small school but Horiguchi-san has fashioned it as competitive as any Japanese corporation, playing the teachers off each other, rewarding and punishing as he sees fit. If you understand Japanese society like I do, then you will do well at GLC. The gaijin who come here and complain are the ones who don’t know how competitive this country really is, even in a farm town like Gunmamachi.
The normal number of class hours at GLC is between 20-25 per week, and the drive time (unpaid) averages around 5 hours per week. However by doing favors for Horiguchi-san, over time I was able to wean my classes down to less than 5 hours per week with less than 1 hour driving. Some of these favors included helping GLC get new teachers from the internet (but I wasn’t allowed to tell them about the 6-day work week or unpaid driving), and reporting any teachers who said bad things about him.
Sometimes, as I sat on my patio all day enjoying the sun while all the other teachers were trudging off to their classes, I felt a little guilty. But when I collected my full salary each month, paid for hardly working, the guilt escaped me. I also tricked one of my friends from back home into coming to Japan and working at GLC. He was a little pissed off because I didn’t warn him about the 6-day work week or unpaid driving, and eventually he quit like all the others.
True, GLC is in the middle of nowhere, but for me this is okay; I am a YouTube addict, I like going to karaoke and onsen (especially while the other teachers have to work), so I was never bored in Gunmamachi like most gaijin are.
I also hit on one of my female students till she reluctantly became my girlfriend (Japanese girls are pushovers!), which helped me kill the time. Actually, it’s against GLC rules to date your students, but in my case Horiguchi-san was willing to overlook it.
Tokyo is several hours away by train; the other teachers could never go to Tokyo because they all had to work on Saturdays, but not me ;) However, I don’t like Tokyo; it’s too “hip” a scene for a corduroy and penny-loafers wearing fellow like me. The Tokyo girls never talked to me at the clubs I went to, so I wound up just going to karaoke, which I could have done in Gunma for much cheaper!
It’s true, many teachers leave Gunma Language Center in disgust within a few weeks or months, but none of these gaijin ever understood that in Japan you must go along to get along. There have been many colorful characters to pass through our school: the 2 lesbians; the guy filming a reality TV show about GLC; the boy who trashed his apartment like a rock start after Horiguchi-san fired him; the old guy who wore a kilt to class and did swan dives at the onsen (so rude!); the lady who walked around in her bikini to tease all the sex-starved male teachers here; the weird rock climber prone to temper tantrums; the creep from California who was obsessed with Japanese high school girls; and assortment of alcoholics; and, most famous in GLC, the guy who went clinically crazy from being overworked and had to be institutionalized.
I’ll probably be remembered as “The Guy Who Got Paid For Not Working” and this is one of the reasons why I finally quit GLC. Because instead of having 3 years teaching experience, all I really have is my first year repeated 3 times. Nor can I say that I ever saw or experienced anything memorable in Gunma since all I ever did was sit in my apartment watching YouTube or playing video games.
I feel kind of stupid now, hence this outpouring of my feelings. But besides all that, GLC is a fine place to work for someone like me. Ignore the original poster of this blog; he’s just a disgruntled GLC employee. As for me, I know that if I fail in my own country, I can always return to GLC where I am wanted. Go GLC!!!

I used to work at GLC too. What I did not appreciate was The Guch overcharging the teachers for our apartments at Purunie. He's making a huge profit not just by forcing teachers to live there - but by charging them DOUBLE what the rent should be! Not only that, but he pads the utility bills so you pay way more for than you actual consumed. The final insult is charging the teachers to use the company cars beyond the allotted mileage to get to class, despite the fact that teachers are not compensated for their personal time it takes to drive there (sometimes HOURS!). This kind of heartless exploitation does not inspire much loyalty towards GLC. What it does inspire are endless gripes, grudges and regrets among the teachers, who mostly spend their free time at Purunie bitching about The Guch. If that's the sort of environment you DON'T want to work in, they do as the above person suggested and look elsewhere in Japan for work.

I speak from my own experience as I worked for "Horror"guchi (spelling error my own)and GLC. Biggest mistake I ever made. He expects teachers to work 12 or more hours a day for 6 days a week and be on call. He constantly tries to bully/control his teachers. He provides accommodation in the apartments that he owns and does not allow you to move to your own place because he wants to collect rent from you. He is one of the tightest/miserly people I have ever encountered. Stay clear of this place. There are MUCH better places than GLC.

If you’ve ever been to Japan you might have noticed that there’s a tremendous number of (often not so handsome, ugly) foreign guys walking hand-in-hand with Japanese women. And at the same time there’s only a very tiny number of foreign (read: non-Asian) women with Japanese men next to them.
You might ask yourself why is that?
Maybe that’s a secret we’ll never quite get.
A lot of Japanese women want a guy that tells them several times a day how much he loves them. For some reason (maybe through the consumption of too many Hollywood movies) Japanese women think that foreign men are like that, GODS! They’re not afraid of showing their feelings in public or telling their girls flat out how they feel about them.
Having a foreign boyfriend Japanese women THINK, is also “cool” and “exotic“. Some just use those poor guys as cute little “accessories“.
The extreme version of this is known as “gaijin hunter” and some will do everything for the sake of having one of those adorable “half”-kids (half Western, half Japanese) just to toss their foreign guy later on.
Once the work starts, eikaiwa keeps teachers busy and close to broke. At considerably less than the average Japanese salary, big English schools pay new teachers just enough to get by in Japan and not much more. The videos do not mention that they’ll have barely 10 days off per year, and find themselves trudging into the language center on public holidays and at Christmas. Nor do eikaiwa schools warn that the cost of living and the expense of domestic travel in Japan will stretch a new teacher’s salary. Many can barely afford a trip home once a year, time permitting. If a teacher stays for a year or two, as most do, they can afford a ticket home and again, not much more. When industry leader Nova collapsed in 2007, thousands of broke foreign teachers were stranded in Japan. Qantas offered cut-price flights home for Australian nationals.
Moreover, teachers can be locked into apartment contracts that make leaving the company difficult or expensive. The work schedule keeps teachers too busy to get many private students and many contracts insist on exclusivity, making it problematic to get outside work through private teacher matchmaking agencies such as Atlas. While Japanese law allows teachers to work elsewhere, it is also perfectly legal for schools to draft contracts that forbid it, making it easy for them to fire teachers for breaking the rules, or at least pressure them into toeing the line.
Working in the “Big Eikaiwa” chains often limits a teacher’s career scope. In a traditional Japanese company, skills are not necessarily transferable, because Japanese firms view company loyalty in an almost feudal sense. A former Toyota manager is rarely welcome at Mitsubishi because whatever corporate conditioning he’s had, regardless of the similarities, is considered tainted by the competition’s way of doing things. The same applies to an experienced teacher moving to a competitor. It is possible, but major chains each have their own methodology. A teacher might as well be a divorcee, trying to land a date while they’re considered “damaged goods.”
In any case, moving from one big chain to another is usually just a step sideways, as pay and conditions do not vary greatly; moving to a smaller school often means lower pay or a part-time assignment. Perhaps the main benefit is that the international experience will look good on teachers’ resumes when they return to their home countries.

I know a lot of you out there are thinking of becoming an English teach in Japan, so I thought this might be interesting for you. The show is about Tom Kellerman (actually the guy who plays Jon Sherr from “My Darling Is A Foreigner”), a foreigner teaching English in Japan. The show is in short segments, has good production quality, and is pretty entertaining all around. The part I liked, though, was how it satarizes teaching English in Japan. I’m pretty curious to see how far they go with this, since, to be completely honest, the English system in Japan kind of is one big satire in itself (no offense to anyone teaching, I’m talking about the education system here).
So, who of you out there is thinking about teaching English in Japan? Personally, I love teaching, but the idea of teaching English in Japan sounds horrible to me. I have a feeling that most places are a bureaucratic cesspool, and not the kind of thing I’d enjoy too much. There’s often very little freedom, and you have to teach the things that they want you to teach (depending on who “they” is, it can be pretty terrible or not too terrible at all). How Japanese view non-Japanese is always a subject of debate. Often there is a mixture of admiration, suspicion, and most often a lot of nervousness about dealing with someone who doesn't look or act like the Japanese. As stated in the Japan FAQ, it is very hard for non-Japanese to get an apartment, or a loan, credit card, etc. There is no logical or rational explanation for this conflict -- since Japanese do not think in a logical, rational fashion, at least in western terms. If you look at Japanese TV ads, the first thing you'll notice is that there are westerners in about a third of them. There are also half a dozen fluent Japanese speaking foreigners endlessly recycled on TV variety shows, constantly ingratiating themselves and amusing the Japanese enough to want them back. They are part of a group called "tarento". Their only real talent is speaking Japanese well, and many long term ex-pats see them as intellectual whores since they must go through the same problems others do, yet they know the rule of getting invited back on TV is to never bite the hand that feeds them. Yet there are also periodically TV infotainment shows following the cops and catching those awful foreigners committing crimes in "our country", with sinister background music shrieking away. Japanese youth generally show positive attitudes about you, from others there is often indifference. And then there is the racial question. Many people coming to Japan ask if the Japanese are racist and cold to westerners. The answer is not that simple. Some pigeonhole Japanese as racist because they are treated differently, assuming it is because of skin color - which is not in itself accurate. It is more because a foreigner is not one of "us". So a clear distinction between racism (which exists in every country, including Japan) and xenophobia is needed. It is no exaggeration to say that, bending the metaphor a bit, the Japanese see things through xenophobic glasses. It must be emphasized though that Japanese racism is in almost all cases NEVER HOSTILE towards others -- so the idea of people screaming epithets at you like in the U.S. is inaccurate. (And lest you feel superior, you won't find skinhead thugs or people in white sheets in Japan, and being a woman or minority religion or race might get you far worse treatment in many countries. Maybe even yours). Online the question from would-be travelers to Japan asking if Japanese like or dislike foreigners is recycled enough to make your eyeballs fall out. Yet nothing is so black and white. With the exception of Tokyo and a lesser degree Osaka, where you could not avoid seeing a foreigner if you tried, most Japanese rarely see and almost never deal with a foreigner, so as elsewhere in the world most are simply indifferent. Few Japanese shun everything foreign (European luxury items are in fact wildly popular) and the stories of Japanese going out of their way to be friendly or help out a foreign tourist (without some ulterior motive) are legendary. So long as we Japanese are us and you are not. For some young Japanese, having a western boyfriend/girlfriend is a status-symbol, but when things go deeper (especially for a western man/Japanese woman) some people with small townish attitudes can change. Suddenly some of the same people showering compliments to the Japanese with a western lover are asking if he/she is weird, or warning about dire consequences. The attitudes from the Japanese parents may be even more disturbing. In short, it's cool (kako-ii) to look western on a superficial level, but anything more serious may bring a negative reaction.

Absent at the inaugural Paralympic Games in 1960 in Rome, Japan made its Paralympic début by hosting the 1964 Games in Tokyo. Japan was the only Asian country to compete at the 1964 Paralympics, and also the only Asian country present at the inaugural Winter Games, making it the first Asian nation to have participated in either Summer or Winter Games. A couple of weeks ago, a local primary school held an event of sorts. The children worked in groups and took their places in various classrooms throughout the school building. There, they gave small presentations, demonstrated how to make things, or administered lighthearted quizzes. Other students, parents and guests moved between the rooms and visited each of the groups. It was well run and reasonably enjoyable.
At the end of the event, people gathered in the school gymnasium where the principal delivered a closing address. He then invited a few students to the stage to speak about the day’s programme. Two students who attend my English school were chosen as speakers and both gave short speeches, relaying their thoughts about the day and which activities they personally had enjoyed the most. They spoke articulately and with confidence and I told them so when they came to my class a few days later.
Of course, the speeches were too well crafted to have been written immediately after the event and I assumed therefore that they had prepared a draft beforehand and had just inserted the relevant details about the activities they enjoyed in the appropriate places.
‘When did you write the speech?’ I asked the students individually.
‘I didn’t,’ each replied. ‘The teacher wrote it and I just had to read it.’
‘But, did you tell the teacher what you wanted to say?’ I asked.
‘No,’ they both replied.
This saddened me. It saddened me because I wondered what the point of such an exercise was and the only conclusion I could come up with was that it was for show. It was designed to make the students and the school look good. It also made me wonder just how many of the activities in each room had been similarly crafted by teachers. I suppose giving students an opportunity to read aloud in front of an audience has its merits, but I can see no reason why the students shouldn’t have been allowed to express their own thoughts.
It reminded me of the English speech contests where speeches are often written almost entirely by a teacher and simply recited by a student, and of the time I worked part-time at a kindergarten where the kids put on an end-of-year show and large sections of the show were pre-recorded with the audio being piped out rather than having the kids speak on stage. The reason given was that the kids might forget their lines.
All of this saddens me because education is no place for illusions. Let kids express their thoughts, let them forget or, more likely, remember their lines, and have faith in their abilities. If they make some small mistakes, so what? Isn’t that part of growing up, part of education? No decent parent is going to think badly of a school because a child makes an error on a public stage, and no decent school should care that any parents may harbour such thoughts. Schools of all places should be concerned with what kids can actually do rather than what it looks as though they can do. The illusion of learning benefits few.

One of the things that you hear about eikaiwa teaching is that it is easy. This is usually said by people who are rubbish teachers. If it were easy, Japan would be full of confident and fluent English speakers. It is not. The level of English here is appallingly low. The other myth about English in Japan is that the students are able to read and write well, but are poor at speaking due to the lack of oral practice at school. That they have few opportunities to speak is true; that they are generally good at reading and writing English is not. Anybody who has attempted to edit or rewrite an English paper written by a Japanese national will tell you that, often, it is a horrendous task. Written English can be every bit as jumbled, nonsensical and poor as the spoken language, and more often than not it is.
Reading skills are similarly poor. Of course, there are many students who go through school and learn to read English with reasonable proficiency, but experience tells me that there are shocking numbers of students who do not. Oh, they can muddle their way through a text, but they read with neither ease nor confidence. This is hardly surprising. Students are not taught how to read. Few schools have any kind of phonics programmes in place and students seem to be expected to learn to read simply by rote memorization of each and every word. That, sadly, is an extremely ineffective way to become a proficient reader of English. Before 2011, students started English in their first year of junior high school. They were given textbooks, taught the alphabet, and from there were expected to be able to read. That is like expecting kids to do maths before they can count.
Christmas is not widely celebrated in Japan as not many people there are Christians. However, several customs have come to Japan from the USA such as sending and receiving Christmas Cards and Presents.
In Japan, Christmas in known as more of a time to spread happiness rather than a religious celebration. Christmas eve is often celebrated more than Christmas Day. Christmas eve is thought of as a romantic day, in which couples spend together and exchange presents. In many ways it resembles Valentine's Day celebrations in the UK and the USA. Young couples like to go for walks to look at the Christmas lights and have a romantic meal in a restaurant - booking a table on Christmas Eve can be very difficult as it's so popular!
Christmas is not a national holiday in Japan, so schools and businesses are normally open on December 25th.
In Japanese Happy/Merry Christmas is 'Meri Kurisumasu'. And it's written in the two Japanese scripts like this; Hiragana: めりーくりすます; Katakana: メリークリスマス. Happy/Merry Christmas in lots more languages.
Parties are often held for children, with games and dancing. Japanese Christmas Cake is a sponge cake decorated with trees, flowers and a figure of Santa Claus.

Take a closer look and you’ll notice the decaying rice paper that reeks of age, mold and absorption of a myriad of unpleasant odors. Then, there’s the cheap commercial carpeting, so heavily worn, in building so poorly maintained, that they’ve become blackened, which was brought about through years of neglect.
Sadly, eikaiwas are more often than not, fly-by-night schemes that carry odd designations like Wilbur’s Playpen, Brainy Kids, English Baby Sitting School, (where a child was recently murdered), Kiddy College, Yes You Can English, Space Cadet Academy, Billy’s Club, or Juniors Playhouse. Honestly, do any of these “schools” sound like the kind of place you’d want to send your child? Of course not. So, why is this the best the industry can offer?
Welcome to the reprehensible, unprofessional, generally unskilled, and unlicensed industry of the eikaiwas. Salutations from the lowest of lows, here to make a fast buck, undermine the importance of education, cause hazardous, and deteriorating working conditions, while pushing the limits of fraud, and failure, all at the unsuspecting customer’s (suckers) expense.
d Miliband has said there can be "no doubting" how seriously Labour is taking immigration as an issue.
He spoke after setting out the second of the party's key election pledges, to "control immigration fairly".
Earlier, a leaked document obtained by the Daily Telegraph suggested Labour wanted its MPs to "move the conversation" away from immigration.
But Mr Miliband dismissed that as "not very well drafted language, out of context, in a briefing document".
Speaking in Great Yarmouth, the Labour leader set out plans to stop cheap foreign workers replacing British staff, saying a future Labour government would pass a law to criminalise such behaviour.
He promised a "sensible approach" to immigration controls, not "false promises or false solutions", and said Labour would "always respond to concerns (about immigration), not dismiss them".
"It isn't prejudiced to worry about immigration, it is understandable," he said.
His speech came a few hours after the Telegraph published details of the leaked Labour strategy document which advised MPs not to send out leaflets about immigration to all voters because it could prove to be "unhelpful".

They were also instructed to "move the conversation on" to other topics if voters expressed concerns about border controls.
The document, entitled Campaigning Against UKIP, says Labour campaigners should listen to the concerns of voters who are leaning towards UKIP.
It claims immigration is the issue "people most often cite" when explaining why they support Nigel Farage's party, which ran Labour close in October's Heywood and Middleton by-election in Lancashire and is targeting a number of Labour-held seats in May's general election.
"Volunteers and activists must understand and acknowledge electors' concerns about immigration on the doorstep, which will mean hearing opinions that may not gel with their own," it says.
The document highlights the changes in Labour's immigration policy since 2010 and says campaigners should "contextualise the problem as something that Labour has a clear plan to improve".

But the document says Labour cannot win a "bidding war" with UKIP, adding: "It does not however follow that campaigning on immigration issues and emphasising our policies in our conversations with electors is always the correct response."
And it warns that Labour may lose votes the more "salient" immigration becomes as an election issue, because "as a political party, we are more effective at changing what is discussed and debated as opposed to changing what may be long-held and entrenched opinions of each party or views on which party has the best policies on each issue".
'Clear policy'
The document adds: "Our focus must instead be moving the conversation on to issues where we have clear policy which tackles the problems people are worried about, whether they express those concerns through the prism of immigration or not."
A Labour spokesman called the newspaper's story "nonsense" and added: "This is a 33-page document in which the Daily Telegraph is interested in taking only a few lines out of context."

Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said she had not signed off on the briefing document, saying it was "wrong" and "doesn't reflect what we are actually doing".
She said the party's latest immigration proposals would "protect responsible employers who want to pay a fair wage".
But Labour backbencher Simon Danczuk said he was worried the party would appear "anti business" by focusing on employers, rather than the government, with its immigration measures.
The party has said immigration will be one of five commitments on its election "pledge card", which will promise fair rules on benefits, including requiring new EU migrants to wait two years before claiming welfare.
In his speech, the Labour leader put forward plans for a new law which would help stop firms exploiting legal loopholes to employ foreign workers on lower wages than their British counterparts.Undercutting pay
In the past, Mr Miliband said he would close one such loophole which allows foreign agency workers to be legally paid less than the national minimum wage as well as increase fines for firms not paying the full wage.
The law would allow evidence to be used against firms which can be shown to have employed migrant staff on significantly different terms to local workers.

Mr Miliband said that the measure would stop such firms from undercutting the pay and conditions of low-paid British workers and also protect immigrants from being exploited.
"We are serving notice on employers who bring workers here under duress or on false terms and pay them significantly lower wages, with worse terms and conditions," he said.
"This new criminal offence will provide protection to everyone. It will help ensure that, when immigrants work here, they do not face exploitation themselves and rogue employers are stopped from undercutting the terms and conditions of everyone else."
Speaking on BBC Radio 4's The World at One, Caspar Glyn QC, chairman of the Industrial Law Society, said the proposed law would "rarely or perhaps never" be enforced because of the difficulties in proving an offence had been committed.
He believed it had been designed "to meet the UKIP threat and the Tory threat rather than actually being a useful piece of legislation".
Steven Woolfe MEP, UKIP's immigration spokesman, said Labour had "nothing to say" on immigration.
He added: "Another duff speech from Miliband means another swathe of ex-Labour voters moving to UKIP".
Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said: "It's no wonder the Labour Party doesn't want to talk about immigration, because they are the prime reason why confidence in the immigration system was so badly damaged."

‘Fake’ teacher in Osaka caught after 15 years of using forged teaching license
Just last week, the Osaka Prefectural Education Committee revealed that they had terminated the services of a 45-year-old male social studies teacher at a municipal middle school in Higashiosaka, as he had been teaching for 15 years without a proper license. The man had already taught in four municipal middles schools, starting the charade 15 years ago on a forged teaching license. Apart from terminating the man, the education board is now reviewing if he can be held criminally liable for the compensation he collected during that time.
“We have never heard of an example where someone had taught for 15 years without a license,” Japan’s Ministry of Education commented on the issue. According to the Osaka committee, the forgery was only discovered because of a periodical process of renewing teachers’ licenses, and the “fake” teacher was discovered when he tried to renew his license early this year. The man had apparently forged his license by changing the name on one that he had borrowed from a friend, and then submitted it as requirement for getting a teaching job. On forged license, the man’s name and date of birth were recorded, but because the license number corresponded to a different person, the man had admitted the forgery upon questioning.
“Even though I had told those around me I was going to be a teacher, I couldn’t graduate from university,” the man admitted. “I was always on edge, wondering when I’d get caught,” he added. The Osaka education committee is now pursuing the matter of 15 years of salary that the man collected with the Osaka Prefectural Police. On the matter of graduation certificates of students who had taken this teacher’s classes, as well as the grade promotion certificates for current students of the school, the committee had decided that they were still valid.
